~2 Months

In a world dominated by superficial encounters and swipe culture, SLIDE emerges as a conceptual mockup for a class project, challenging the norms of platforms like Tinder, Hinge, and Bumble. By prioritizing genuine connections and meaningful interactions, SLIDE replaces traditional swiping with a unique sliding feature, encouraging users to explore connections beyond appearances and fostering authentic relationships in both platonic and romantic contexts.

Prompt

Problem Statement: Many popular dating apps foster instant gratification and unhealthy mindsets by promoting hookup culture.

Given the task to design an app in an existing and competitive industry, I needed to identify a unique niche to ensure its success. The market is currently dominated by major companies that have set distinct standards for dating: Tinder as a hookup central, Hinge as a dating central, and Bumble as a mix of both. It was also essential to promote an inclusive environment where individuals seeking relationships can be their complete selves without any biases or stigma.

Process

I initiated the project by outlining the app's structure using a Persona, an Information Architecture (IA) Diagram, and a User Task Flow.

From this, I was able to conceptualize the primary features of the app:

  • A slider to gauge interest, replacing the traditional swiping feature.

  • Avatar-based profiles to enhance safety and privacy, promoting inclusivity.

  • Options for pursuing either platonic or romantic relationships.

  • Ability to comment and reply to profile biographies in the user exploration section.

  • Prioritization of users with high interest percentages, with opportunities to increase interaction percentages for users with initially low interest.

Final Product

The resulting prototype is an inclusive dating app designed to initiate meaningful relationships by enhancing user interaction. Developing this mock-up was challenging, but identifying a valuable niche in the industry should promote positive mental health outcomes.
